A Typical Team Building Scenario on QWL*
First Night:
Parties fly into San Diego and get settled at Lowes Coronado Hotel or another fine hotel of their choice. After dinner, the first evening is a combination of basic team building exercises, temperament checking, a brief introduction to sailing and the next day's agenda. Sailing role assignment sheets will be distributed and the participants are asked to decide which role they want to play. These are real ship roles like captain, navigator, etc.
First Day
Participants will assemble at the Chula Vista Yacht Club and Marina where they will receive more basic instruction, set goals, decide on roles, and make decisions about the process.
At sea drills, exercises and maneuvers will be explained. The team will decide who will be the "man overboard".
At mid morning QWL will be readied for sail, backed from her slip, taken out of the Marina and enter the first of two channels. Members of the team will perform all functions.
During the day sails will be raised and lowered, the boat will be anchored and un-anchored, some meals will be prepared on-board, others will be from hotels along the route (Marriott, Sheraton, etc.). We will process our learnings mid way and allow members to switch roles. Upon return the crew will have dinner and process their experience with the assistance of the observer - facilitators.
Second Day
If a second day is desired, QWL will be anchored the first night in Mission Bay, around the Point Loma Peninsula. The team will use the Zodiac to forage for accommodations or stay on the boat. The way these decisions get made and the way problems are solved will be included in the process observation feedback.
Sailing back to San Diego Bay will be by way of the Coronado Islands off the coast of Mexico. Roles will change and exercises conducted. Processing will occur either before or after dinner depending on flight arrangements of the crew.
After you are home...
All crew members will be given written feedback on their teamwork by the consultants following the teambuilding.
